WhatsApp Is About to Start Charging You for Every Customer Reply

18 September 2026 · WebAcumen Team

From 1 October 2026, Meta is ending one of the quiet perks that made WhatsApp Business the default customer service channel for thousands of small and medium businesses: unlimited free replies inside the 24-hour service window. From that date, only the first 1,000 delivered service messages per business phone number are free each month — every message after that is billed per delivery, and the free allowance does not roll over. Utility template messages sent inside that same window, previously exempt, become billable too.

What's Actually Changing

The shift is from "unlimited free conversation" to "metered messaging," and the numbers add up faster than they look:

  • Before 1 October: any service reply or utility template sent inside the 24-hour window was free, no matter the volume.
  • From 1 October: the first 1,000 delivered service messages per number are free monthly; after that, businesses pay per message, with rates set per recipient market (early published examples range from roughly $0.0014 per message in some markets to over $0.05 in others).
  • A business replying to 10,000 customers a month on a single number could go from paying nothing to a real, recurring line item — and that's before accounting for multiple numbers, multiple markets, or peak-season spikes.
  • What stays free: incoming customer messages, the 24-hour window mechanism itself, and qualifying 72-hour free entry-point conversations.

For businesses running support, order updates, appointment reminders, or sales follow-up over WhatsApp — which is most of retail, services, and e-commerce in South Africa — this isn't a rounding error. It's a new operating cost that scales with success: the busier you get, the more you pay per reply.

Where WebAcumen Fits In

This is exactly the kind of shift that punishes businesses running WhatsApp manually and rewards businesses running it efficiently. The fix isn't fewer conversations with customers — it's fewer wasted messages per conversation, and that's an automation and AI chatbot problem, not a policy problem.

We build AI chatbots and automation workflows that sit in front of your WhatsApp Business API and resolve the repetitive stuff — order status, FAQs, booking confirmations, business hours — in one clean exchange instead of a five-message back-and-forth, and hand off to a human only when it actually needs one. We also connect WhatsApp to your CRM so replies are informed by order and customer history from the first message, which cuts the clarifying-question loop that drives up message counts. For businesses already paying agents to answer the same twenty questions daily, this pricing change is the business case: the cost of NOT automating just became visible on an invoice.

If you're running WhatsApp for customer service, sales, or order updates, now is the time to audit your message volume and conversation design before the meter starts running — not after.
