Shopify Just Broke Thousands of Checkouts on August 26 — Here's What Non-Plus Merchants Lost

28 August 2026 · WebAcumen Team

On August 26, 2026, Shopify's deadline for non-Plus merchants (Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans) to migrate off the legacy Thank You and Order Status pages quietly passed. Per Shopify's own Help Center, any store that hadn't rebuilt its checkout customizations on the new checkout extensibility framework had them wiped and replaced with Shopify's defaults — automatically, no rollback.

What actually broke

For stores that missed the window, the damage isn't cosmetic — it's financial, and it's largely invisible day-to-day:

  • Conversion tracking pixels for Google Ads and Meta stop firing on the Thank You page, breaking attribution between ad spend and actual sales.
  • Any code added through the old "Additional Scripts" box — post-purchase upsells, review-request popups, custom order-status content — is gone.
  • Custom checkout.liquid styling reverts to Shopify's generic theme, undoing brand work some merchants paid for years ago.

The uncomfortable part: campaigns keep running and keep spending while the data that tells you whether they're working has stopped flowing. A merchant can go weeks assuming a campaign underperformed, when in reality it's still converting — Shopify just stopped telling anyone. Shopify flagged this well in advance (Plus stores went through the same deadline back in August 2025), but "well in advance" doesn't help a merchant who was heads-down running the business and never saw the notice.

Where WebAcumen fits in

This is squarely an e-commerce development problem, not a marketing one. Fixing it means rebuilding what broke on Shopify's current framework rather than patching the old one: recreating tracking as native pixels or Web Pixel API events so ad platforms see real conversions again, moving post-purchase upsells and review prompts into checkout UI extensions or blocks, and reproducing brand styling through the checkout editor instead of deprecated Liquid.

We do this kind of Shopify checkout and store rebuild work regularly as part of our e-commerce development service — whether that's a full custom build, a WooCommerce-to-Shopify migration, or, like here, restoring functionality a platform update quietly took away. If your store is on Basic, Grow, or Advanced and you haven't specifically checked your Thank You page since August 26, there's a good chance something is broken that you haven't noticed yet.
